Titanium Used in Construction

Present Situation of Titanium Used in Construction Abroad

Since Japan pioneered the use of titanium in construction in the 1970s, although hundreds of buildings have used titanium materials in the United States, China, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and other countries, Japan is still uses the largest amount of titanium in buildings. Titanium used in construction is mainly used for roofs, supplemented by exterior wall decoration, and structures, interiors, skylight partitions, etc. also account for a certain proportion.

Present situation of Titanium in Japanese Construction Japan is an island country surrounded by the sea. Buildings are deeply affected by the marine climate. At the same time, Japan is a country with frequent earthquakes and volcanoes. The design and material selection of buildings should consider earthquake resistance and flame retardancy. Require. In addition, Japan is still a country with a very developed industry, and the acid rain and industrial smoke caused by automobile exhaust have a relatively large impact on the environment. Therefore, titanium was first promoted and applied in Japan.

In 1973, for the first time in Japan, a 0.3 mm thick golden titanium plate was used on the roof of the Shrine Shrine, 50 m2, about 203 kg. After obtaining the successful experience of using titanium in construction, titanium is also used in other shrines and other buildings, but the scale is very small. It was not until 1984 that 0.3 mm thick titanium plates (720 m2, about 1 t) were used again on the roof of the Tokyo Electric Power Company’s power building, that the curtain of titanium used in Japanese construction was really opened. From the original limited to shrines, temples, etc., it has developed to ordinary buildings such as schools and residences, such as the roof of Matian Elementary School in Okinawa, and the Gaoan residence in Nagoya. The use part is no longer limited to the roof, and the interior and exterior wall decorations, window frames, eaves, etc. have been applied, and the amount has increased rapidly. From 1986 to 1987, more than 40 construction projects have used titanium materials, and only the office building of Osaka Sanei Metal Co., Ltd. One item used 5 tons of titanium. The rapid growth of titanium used in construction has mature technology and accumulated rich experience. It has become a model of titanium used in construction worldwide and has attracted the attention of European and American countries.

The use of titanium in construction in developed countries such as Europe and the United States started in the 1990s. Although it is used in the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Egypt and other countries, it is limited to some individual cases of special buildings.

In 1997, the $100 million Guggenheim Museum was completed in Bilbao, Spain. In order to make the museum strong and beautiful, the building material uses titanium plates with a thickness of 0.3 mm, and the amount of titanium used reaches 60 tons. The Guggenheim Museum's unique design of curves and sharp corners, coupled with the artistic charm of the towering glass atrium and titanium metal, made it rated as "the most beautiful museum on earth" by the press. The Abu Dhabi Airport in the United Arab Emirates, designed and expanded by the Paris Airport Group, is the first successful example of using titanium as a building structure material, with hundreds of tons of titanium used. The upsurge of titanium used in large buildings is quietly rising.

The use of titanium in construction in my country started later, and like European and American countries, it is limited to special buildings with high artistic requirements. For example, the Hangzhou Grand Theater located in Qianjiang New City, built in 2003, is the earliest case of using titanium in large buildings in my country. The theater was designed by a Canadian designer. More than 6,000 industrial pure titanium plates were used for the oval rear cover, weighing about 160 tons. Afterwards, the world's top National Grand Theater designed by French architects, whose 36,000 m2 circular roof uses 60 tons of industrial pure titanium plates, was put into use in 2007. In addition, 3710 m2 of titanium was used for the roof of the first pavilion in Linping, Hangzhou, 6500 m2 (thickness 0.4mm) of industrial pure titanium plates were used for the MTRC Central Railway Station in Hong Kong, China, and titanium was also used for the lobby of Dazhong Temple International Plaza in Beijing as a decorative material.
